Safety Signs

Fire safety signs are regulated in South Africa under SANS 1186 part 1 and part 5, as well as within other Acts in South Africa. South African regulations made under the Occupational Health and Safety Act, 1993 as well as by-laws made under the Fire Brigade Services Act, 1987 require employers to provide and maintain safety signs where there is significant risk to health and safety. Crucial in any work environment, the purpose is to prevent injury and ensure staff and visitors are aware of the possible dangers and hazards ahead in certain situations and/or environments. It is therefore a legal requirement to display safety signs in your building to protect the health and safety of people.

Referrals: Documentation SANS10400T, SANS10105, SANS1186, and your local By-Laws Fire safety signs and fire directional signs are also important when carrying out a fire risk assessment, to determine the location of fire equipment and emergency exits. All signage that falls within SANS 1186 must be SABS approved and may be internally or externally illuminated, or photoluminescent type and shall comply with the relevant requirements of SANS 1186-1, SANS 1186-3, SANS 1186-5 and SANS 1464- 22. Photoluminescent signs emit light because of the absorption of radiation. In the event of a fire where light or visibility is poor, the signs are therefore able to glow in the dark indicating the location of the fire equipment and safe evacuation route. According to SANS 1186-1 of 2015, safety signs not only have dedicated colours, but also geometric shapes. Firefighting equipment/fire safety signs are required to be square and rectangle in shape. All safety signs must be mechanically mounted.
